a tuesday night, when you’re not home

the storm came and went in flashes
after the wind danced with the trees all day,
and now the hail has made an icy carpet of barnacles on the deck

what is it about
the sound of
the rain on
the roof
?

if a tree falls in the forest and no one’s there to write a poem about it, will it still make a sound?
